The Willy-Brandt-Haus in Berlin is well-known for its interesting art and photo exhibitions. For the first time in Germany, the photo exhibition “From the Spanish Civil War to the Second World War” will be shown. 70 years ago, the Spanish Civil War ended with Franco’s victory, after having been supported by Hitler’s Legion Condor and Mussolini’s Corpo Truppe Volontarie: On 27 February 1939, the UK and France officially recognised the Franco regime; on 1 April, Franco announced his troops’ victory.
The exhibition presents primarily unknown images from the agency EFE’s historic archives, e.g. the manipulated photos of the meeting between Hitler and Franco in Hendaye oder pictores on the Blue Division, consisting of in total 47,000 Spanish volunteers that took part 1941-3 in the campaign aganst the USSR under the the command of the German Wehrmacht (Nazi Germany Armed Forces). Amongst others, works of the photographer Hans Gutmann/Juan Guzmán can be seen who accompanied the International Brigades as war reporter.
At the opening on 4 March 2009 at 1930h, not only the Embassador of Spain to Germany H.E. Rafael Dezcaller and the Präsident des Abgeordnetenhauses von Berlin (President of the Berlin House of Representatives) Walter Momper will speak, but also PD Dr. Carlos Collado (historian, University of Göttingen), Victor Grossman (journalist and writer) and Helios Mediburu (son of resistance fighters).
