255.804 km² – Young Art from the Former Yugoslavia (Brot Kunsthalle, Vienna)

From 27 May until 23 June 2011, Hilger Brot-Kunsthalle in Vienna (Austria) presents “255,804 km² – Young Art from the Former Yugoslavia“, naming the size of the then-Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in its title. The exhibition assembles works from 30 artists who were born in this state that broke down in 1991-1992. This collapse led to several wars; most of their conflicts are still unresolved.

Conference: “Tanks vs. Statues – Culture in Political Conflicts” (Tutzing)

From 2 to 4 June 2011, the Akademie für politische Bildung Tutzing (Academy for Civic Education Tutzing, Germany) is organising a conference on culture in political conflicts named “Panzer gegen Statuen – Kultur in politischen Konflikten” (Tanks vs. Statues). Headed by Dr. Saskia Hieber and Dr. Ondřej Kalina , the symposium addresses issues from  Iraq, Egypt, the Silk Road, the Balkans and Afghanistan. “Historical Picture” at Kunstraum t27 (Berlin)

From 11 December 2010 to 9 January 2011 (and as already announced here), the Berlin-based gallery Kunstraum t27 celebrates its third birthday with the group exhibition “Historienbild” within a six-part exhibition series about the various genres of (not just) painting. All the 30 works by Chris Dreier, Andreas Seltzer, Henning Kappenberg, Barbara Duisberg and Thilo Droste differently address history and remembering the past, but not the least war.

Aircraft Carrier to be Auctioned: HMS Invincible

Did you ever wanted to have something really special? The time is long gone to impress somebody with a simple yacht. Maybe this offer could be interesting then: since 28 November 2010, the United Kingdom is selling its aircraft carrier HMS Invincible by auction. In service since 1980, the ship lived up to its name by staying undefeated and is now awaiting the cutting torch, as it will be sold as scrap only.

Shiptare Boys: Kosovo

10 Years ago, on 24 March 1999, Operation Allied Force had been started, commonly known as the Kosovo War. The satirical version of a Beach Boys song from the USA was used in 2002 by some Norwegian peacekeepers to make a music video, leading to diplomatic disturbance some years later. The result is still amusing – not the least because of the timeless and transferable text.

As already announced, on 20 February 2009, Annie Leibovitz has opened her exhibition “A Photograper’s Life . 1990-2005” in the gallery C/O Berlin. In addition to many celebrety portraits, private pictures and some landscapes, there is also a small, but fine selection of her photos from Sarajevo and Rwanda.
