“War” – Photographs by James Nachtwey at the Military-Historical Museum, Dresden

From 12 February until the end of May 2012, the Militärhistorische Museum (MHM, Military-Historical Museum of the Bundeswehr¹) in Dresden will show the exhibition “Krieg” (war) with photographs by James Nachtwey. He is one of the most important contemporary photojournalists; not the least, he is famous for his touching pictures from zones of war and conflict. Nachtwey will receive the Dresden Peace Award; in this course, he will open the MHM’s first special exhibition after its recent reopening. Krieg will include some 60 of his works, including his impressive 11m-long frieze that had only been on show in two exhibitions in the USA and France.

Markus Georg Reintgen: “Remember September”

Ten years have now passed since the attacks of 9/11 on the USA that profoundly changed the world. Artists try to cope with these traumatic events, including disabled artists such as Markus Georg Reintgen (* 1963 in Nastätten, Germany) in his series “Remember September”.

Wartist presents: Group Show “Turning Point” on 10 years of 9/11 at ARD-Hauptstadtstudio, Berlin

We are proud to present the group show “Zeitenwende” (turning point) on the premises of the both centrally located and well-visited ARD-Hauptstadtstudio on 1 September 2011. 12 artists show their positions on the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and their ongoing aftermath: more than 50 works include light, video and textile installations, photography, watercolours and paintings. The exhibition is curated by Martin Bayer (wartist.org) and will be opened on 1 September 2011 by Head of ARD-Hauptstadtstudio Ulrich Deppendorf. “Zeitenwende” is a cooperation with Deutsche Atlantische Gesellschaft (German Atlantic Association).

Don’t miss it: La Biennale di Venezia

Soon, THE art event of 2011 is about to begin: on 4 June, the 54th Biennale di Venezia, curated by Bice Curiger with this time’s title “ILLUMInazioni” will be opened. Again this year, critics will point out how very outdated national pavillons are in the time of globalisation. And again this year, the many national pavillons will demonstrate the different ways of (re)presenting art.

Wartist presents: “Furtive” by Simon Menner (Berlin)

From 18 March 2011, Wartist presents photographic works by Simon Menner in the premises of the Berlin-based political consultancy republik movida GmbH. The exhibition “Furtive”, curated by Martin Bayer, will show parts of two cycles, “Camouflage” and “Murder Weapons”. Reinhold Robbe, Wehrbeauftragter des Deutschen Bundestages 2005-2010,¹ will give a welcoming address.

Opening: SHOOT! Photography existential (C/O Berlin)

From 5 February until 27 March 2011, the photo gallery C/O Berlin – its future still being imperiled, as the investor who bought the premises did not stick to its own agreement – presents the exhibition “SHOOT! Photography Existential”. It reminds us of a nearly forgotten fun fair attraction, the “photo shot”: the shooter “kills” himself by taking a picture of himself – obviously, this virtual self-destruction was quite fascinating.

Simon Menner: Images from the STASI Secret Archives (Berlin)

As recently announced at Wartist, from 17 January until 3 March 2011, Simon Menner presents “Images from the Secret STASI Archives”¹ as part of the exhibition series “Rendezvous mit Kunst” (meeting with art) at Berlin’s restaurant Diekmann. The exhibition of 26 authentic photographs is part of a bigger cycle that the artist selected from images he was being provided by the “Bundesbeauftragten für die Unterlagen des Staatssicherheitsdienstes der ehemaligen Deutschen Demokratischen Republik” (BStU)².

From 17 January to 3 March 2011, Simon Menner presents “Images from the Secret STASI Archives”¹ within the framework of “Rendezvous mit Kunst” (meeting with art) at Berlin’s restaurant Diekmann. Also in this country, surveillance by images and video is increasingly becoming ubiquitous. But what does “Big Brother” really see? How banal is the “gaze of evil” of an oppressive regime, and how obvious is its terror?

“Historical Picture” at Kunstraum t27 (Berlin)

From 11 December 2010, Berlin-based gallery Kunstraum t27 is presenting the group exhibition “Historienbild” (historical painting) within the six-part exhibition series about the various genres of (not just) painting. “Historienbild” has the subject of dealing with history, and interestingly all the works directly or indirectly address war.
